The United States Men's Basketball Team rallied back from a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat Serbia, 95-91, and clinch a berth in the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 8) thanks to clutch performances from its veteran stars.

The Americans trailed 54-23 at halftime before outscoring Serbia, 52-37 in the second half, which included a 32-15 edge in the fourth quarter. Stephen Curry led all scorers with 36 points, which included shooting 9-14 on 3-point attempts, which was one-point shy of Carmelo Anthony 's single-game record.

Team USA took the lead late in the fourth after Curry hit a 3-pointer with 2:20 remaining, which was immediately followed by back-to-back coast-to-coast layups by LeBron James and Curry on the next two possessions. James recorded a triple-double, finishing Thursday's game with 16 points, 12, rebounds and 10 assists.

American sprinter Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone set a new world record in the women's 400-meter hurdles final on Thursday. McLaughlin-Levrone finished with a time of 50.37, breaking her own previous record of 50.65 set at the U.S. trials in June.

The 25-year-old had previously set the record for the event five times prior to her gold medal win on Thursday, initially breaking fellow American Dalilah Muhammad 's previous record in June 2021.

American sprinter Noah Lyles was confirmed to have COVID-19 by American Track & Field officials after taking bronze in the 200-meter final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 8), BBC Sport reports. Lyles nearly fell to the ground and was seen receiving medical attention after the race after wearing a mask prior to the event.

Letsile Tebogo of Botswana finished with a time of 19.46, becoming the second representative of an African country to medal in the 200-meter, joining Frankie Fredericks , who won silver at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta games. USA teammate Kenny Bednarek took silver with a time of 19.62, while Lyles finished with a time of 19.70.
