An inmate who escaped custody during a trip to the hospital was captured in Kannapolis, North Carolina , 100 miles from where he fled.

Ramone Jamarr Alston was serving a life sentence for fatally shooting a one-year-old girl on Christmas day in 2015. He managed to free himself from his leg restraints and ran off into the woods near UNC Hillsborough Hospital on Tuesday (August 13).

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said that Alston was captured shortly before 2 a.m. at a hotel on Cloverleaf Parkway with the help of FBI Charlotte SWAT agents, Kannapolis Police, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Authorities also arrested Jacobia Crisp and charged her with felony aiding and abetting a fugitive.

Alston is being transferred to a high-security prison, where he will resume serving his life sentence. He is also being charged with felony escape from prison.

Officials said that the investigation into his escape remains ongoing and that he could face additional charges if there is evidence he committed other crimes while on the run.

"I am grateful to our DAC staff and thankful for the support and effort from hundreds of local, state, and federal public safety officers who helped in the search and investigation that returned Alston safely to custody," said Secretary Todd Ishee . "This was an incredible collaborative effort of many people and agencies."
