KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges earlier this week in connection with a deadly shooting that happened in Independence in June.

Antonio Catalan-Sharr, 23, of Kansas City, has been charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action in the shooting death of Donnie M. Kirkland Jr., 20, of Independence, on June 5.

Independence police said that at 12:50 p.m. on June 5, officers were sent to the area of Sundown Drive and Claremont Avenue — located less than a block south of Highway 24 — on a report of a shooting.

Officers found Kirkland, who had been shot outside of an apartment, and a few hours later, IPD reported he had died at a hospital.

Catalan-Sharr is in the Jackson County jail with a cash bond set at $250,000. He has a bond review hearing set for July 31.
