Indiana Fever Coach Speaks On How Caitlin Clark is Defended

Adjusting to life in the WNBA has been challenging at times for Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft has faced a lot of physicality in the early going of her career, as she has been on the receiving end of several ‘welcome to the league’ moments.

After her record-setting career at Iowa, Caitlin Clark knew that there would be challenges as a pro. At this level, opponents are much more physical and athletic, which has led to some challenges on the court.

Her style of play is predicated on movement on the perimeter, but shaking free isn’t as easy in the WNBA. With such a youthful roster, it has been far from smooth sailing for the Indiana Fever.

Since going on a four-game winning streak, the Indiana Fever have lost two in a row. Against the Seattle Storm, a major reason for the team’s lack of success was their ability to take Caitlin Clark out of the game.

Following the game, Christie Sides commented on the kind of defenses that her star guard has faced. They need to adjust, as teams are beginning to blitz Caitlin Clark to get the ball out of her hands.

“The way people guard her, it’s tough,” Sides said . “Once the ball is out of her hands, she is setting up the rest of our team for some really great looks. She’s getting some pretty good looks [for herself] off the ball. But we like her on the ball, so we have to figure out how to manage the two.”

Showing trust in her teammates is certainly a positive thing. You always want your players making the right play, as they are only going to reach the levels possible if everyone is clicking and on the same page.

But, Sides also knows for the Indiana Fever to reach their potential, they need Caitlin Clark leading the way. In addition to her comments about the defense she is facing, Sides would like to see the Iowa product shooting the ball more .
