    Keep Your Family – and New Drivers! – Safe This School Year

    STATEWIDE — You may be getting ready to send your child back to school. If so, Indiana State Police have some tips on how you and your family can stay safe.

    State Police Sergeant Matt Ames says about 19 kids are killed nationwide each year in incidents involving school buses. So, he believes it is important to get “back in a routine” in order to protect everyone.

    Ames also notes that this can be an exciting time for teenagers who will drive themselves to school for the first time.

    If your child is a new driver, he urges you to have a serious conversation about the responsibilities of being behind the wheel. And, while it may seem uncool , remind them to stay off of their devices, follow speed limits, and wear seatbelts.

    For Parents and Guardians:

    • Watch for children and stopped buses while driving.
    • Be patient and drive slowly.
    • Follow all laws regarding school buses, especially when the “Stop” arm is extended.
    • Leave for school/bus stops early.
    • Avoid using a cell phone or other device in the car.

    For Students:

    • Take the same route to and from school each day.
    • Let parents know of any after-school plans.
    • Travel in groups and use public sidewalks/streets.
    • Look both ways before crossing the street.
    • Stay clear of strangers and report any questionable interactions.
    • Leave for school/bus stops early.
