On Thursday, Purdue and government officials marked the inauguration of Purdue’s new urban main-campus extension in Indianapolis.

The event was held at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis and represents Purdue’s renewed prowess in the capital, along with the formal end of what was IUPUI, the combined Indianapolis-based campus that housed Indiana University and Purdue.

“Today is about Purdue’s commitment as the public land-grant university with excellence at scale,” President Mung Chiang said.

Purdue has secured numerous partnerships to support the campus and Indianapolis economy. The most notable is a shared-use research and development facility with Elanco Animal Sciences announced in late May.

In June, Purdue's board of trustees made additional announcements such as a new $187 million dollar mixed-use living and classroom building that is going to be built on West Street and Stadium Avenue in downtown Indianapolis.

In the spring, it was announced that Purdue Indianapolis motorsports engineering program will work with Dallara, IndyCar's sole manufacturer.

Purdue Indianapolis will be rolling into its first year of operation on July 1, and mainly serving majors associated with technology across engineering, polytechnics and science.

“The establishment of Purdue University in Indianapolis will have a profound impact on our community, with expanded research capabilities and STEM education,” said Andre Carson, U.S. representative for Indiana’s 7th congressional district, which primarily consists of Indianapolis.
