Dozens gather at vigil for 18-year-old who was killed on Indy’s northeast side over the weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — Family and friends of a man who was shot and killed early Sunday morning are coming together to remember his life.

Just a few hours before sunset Monday night, candles glowed and a pair of golden balloons waved from the exact spot where 18-year-old Isaak Williams was found shot and killed at an apartment complex off of 39th Street in Indianapolis.

Prayers and powerful messages of grief echoed as dozens of people gathered at the vigil.

“Isaak was just a fun, loving, goofy boy,” Isaak’s aunt Teresa Brown said.

Friends, family and strangers gathered wearing green and solemnly lifting ballons of the same color. Family of the young man, like his aunt Teresa Brown, said his life was cut short hardly a year after he moved to Indianapolis to begin a new chapter.

“He was here trying to start his own life,” Brown said. “He came from Arizona. He wanted to do his own thing, which is why he got the apartment. (He) had a job. (He) was just trying to start his life.”

Isaak’s family and friends describe him as kind, loving and faithful. He was motivated like no other, they said.

“The last thing he was doing was reading the bible,” Isaak’s cousin Montez Williams said. “Just showing that was the path he was on. I just know him as a good kid, somebody who was actually trying to do something different.”

Those living at the Villages at Mill Crossing told FOX59 and CBS4 they heard gunfire Saturday night. It was a neighbor who found Williams the next morning.

While police search for a suspect, Isaak’s family wants its message to be heard all across Indianapolis. They, like many families impacted by gun crime, are demanding an end to senseless violence.

“At one point, everyone is going to be affected by gun violence,” Brown said. “If you think you won’t, keep thinking that. If you see something, say something.”
