Increased temperatures and elevated humidity will make for a muggy Wednesday.

Heat indices of over 100 degrees are expected in some counties in Central Indiana, according to local meteorologists with the National Weather Service. These heat indices combine temperature and humidity to represent the "real feel" of the weather.

On Wednesday, the maximum heat index for Marion County is expected to be 96 degrees.

Counties in southern parts of Central Indiana will feel even hotter. Knox, Greene, Lawrence and Jackson counties are all expected to reach maximum heat indices of 100 degrees or higher.

In a social media post the National Weather Service said the highest heat index values would be from the afternoon into the early evening.

Thunderstorms are expected in some counties in the early evening, which will quell some of the heat, according to meteorologist Andrew White. He said Indianapolis can expect thunderstorms somewhere between 2-5 p.m. Wednesday.

"The worst of the heat is really just going to be concentrated on tomorrow," White said.

White said unlike the heat wave a few weeks ago, Wednesday is expected to be a one-off. Thursday will feel cooler with temperatures in the mid-80s and the rest of the week will stay in the low to mid-80s as well.

"Please take extra precautions if spending time outdoors during peak heating, especially those in sensitive or vulnerable populations," the National Weather Service on its social media pages.
