NFL analyst believes Indianapolis Colts have 'unique weapon' in former Day 2 pick

As the Indianapolis Colts prepare for the second season under Shane Steichen, the tight end position remains somewhat of a question mark.

With veteran starter Mo Alie-Cox on the roster bubble, there could be some changes coming to the room when the team concludes training camp and the preseason.

It could lead the way for third-year tight end Jelani Woods to see an expanded role, something Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports wants to see.

"Shane Steichen saw how tight ends can make life easy on quarterbacks during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, so the former 6-foot-7 all-state basketball player could be utilized as a unique weapon in Indy," Benjamin wrote.

Woods missed the entire 2023 season due to nagging hamstring injuries. He had hoped to return by midseason but a further setback kept him from playing a single snap.

Now, Woods enters his third season in the NFL with the chance to make a pretty decent impact in the passing game. His elite athleticism could give him the edge as the starter, and he's already shown off some upside as a receiving option.

The Colts have a crowded tight end room entering training camp, but no one would be surprised if Woods came out as the leader on the depth chart when it's all said and done.
