INDIANAPOLIS — A 17-year-old has died after being injured in a crash just minutes after Indy police – who were investigating a group of armed teens – stopped chasing a car he was inside of.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called Sunday to investigate a group of young males flashing firearms in the downtown area. While en route, officers were told that the juveniles had put the guns inside a parked car.

Once in the area, officers began chasing the group of teens on foot. One juvenile male was taken custody and later released, but the others in the group were not found.

Analysts at IMPD’s Real Time Crime Center then saw a person known to be banned from owning guns get into the driver’s seat of the parked car with a gun on him. Two other juveniles were passengers in the car, including 17-year-old Terryoun Mays.

Once the car left the downtown area, IMPD said responding officers attempted a traffic stop. While the driver initially stopped and pulled over, police said he did not follow further commands and eventually drove away.

Officers continued to follow the car until they lost sight of it and the pursuit was eventually terminated. IMPD said Monday that the officers then pulled over to the side of the road and came to a full stop.

Around three minutes later, IMPD said that officers found the suspect car had crashed and become inverted in the 2600 block of Brill Road. The driver and two passengers, including Mays, were all taken to a local hospital suffering from critical injuries.

On Monday morning, the Marion County Coroner confirmed that one 17-year-old passenger in the car had died from his injuries. He was identified as Mays.

IMPD said that accident investigators were called immediately after the crash to investigate. Inside the car, police reportedly found two guns, a drum-style magazine and several bullets.

No other information was immediately provided by IMPD. This article will be updated as more is released.
