INDIANAPOLIS — Officials with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are remembering Deputy John Durm after he was killed one year ago.

On Wednesday, members of the office gathered at the Buck Creek Winery to unveil the John Durm Memorial Mile interstate sign, according to a post on the office’s Facebook page.

According to previous reports, a bipartisan proposal was brought forward in the Indiana General Assembly in September 2023 to rename a mile of I-74 after Durm.

Durm, a 38-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was killed in July 2023 by an inmate attempting to escape from the detention center, according to previous reports.

Officials said in the Facebook post that the John Durm Memorial Mile will be a mile stretch of I-74 near the Acton Rd. exit.

“Thank you to everyone who ensured Dep. Durm’s memory lives on in this way,” the post read.
