INDIANAPOLIS — Another round of severe weather is expected later tonight, with strong winds and a possible tornado as the main threats. More thunderstorms may occur on Tuesday, but forecasters don’t expect them to be severe.

“You could have straight-line winds that could have the same intensity as a tornado,” says Alex McGinnis of the National Weather Service. “Straight-line winds in a bow echo can be much more widespread than a little tornado going across the field somewhere.”

McGinnis warns that winds could reach 75 mph, which could cause various types of damage.

“If you were to see 75 MPH, trees could be taken down, power poles could be taken down, they could even do some superficial damage to homes.”

Cooler weather is expected later this week. Humid heat will persist until Wednesday afternoon, and a cooler, less humid air mass will move in by Thursday for the Brickyard 400 weekend.

“Tuesday, we are looking at more storms but nothing severe,” says McGinnis. “The main severe threat will be later tonight.”
