Thunderstorms and severe weather covered large swaths of the Midwest under a blanket of heavy rain Tuesday morning, leaving thousands of Hoosiers without electricity.

As of 9 a.m., upwards of 5,500 AES customers and roughly 600 Duke Energy customers were without power in the Indianapolis area, concentrated mostly in the northeast side of the city. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Central Indiana say more storms are on the way.

"Thunderstorms will train across southwestern parts of Central Indiana and produce an inch or more an hour rainfall through 10 a.m.," NWS forecasters said on social media.

Here's what we know about today's weather and how to check the status of power outages across the area.
