INDIANAPOLIS — A man was shot and killed after a road rage incident turned into a deadly altercation on the southeast side of Indianapolis Tuesday night.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 8:22 p.m. to Thompson Road and Emerson Avenue after receiving reports that a person had been injured in a shooting.

Upon arrival, IMPD said officers found an unresponsive man lying in the roadway who was suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to an area hospital in “very” critical condition, according to IMPD.

IMPD confirmed around 10:30 p.m. that the victim had died.

Witnesses on scene told investigators that the shooting appeared to be the result of a prior road rage incident involving a black Honda and white Chevy pickup truck, according to IMPD. The witnesses added that the driver of the pickup truck appeared to be the one who opened fire.

    No other injuries were reported.

IMPD confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck remained on the scene and has been cooperating with investigators.

The investigation into the incident remains active, with detectives looking to obtain surveillance footage possibly depicting the moments leading up to the shooting.

IMPD confirmed that an individual has been detained at the crime scene as police continue investigating. However, it remains unclear what role, if any, they may have had in the deadly shooting.
