Jeff Gordon, Rick Hendrick unsure if Kyle Larson will return for Indy 500 double in 2025 after Brickyard win

It might not have gone quite according to plan, and certainly NASCAR fans were disappointed that a competitive finish between Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick in double overtime was ruined by a late caution flag, but one of NASCAR’s best drivers got his moment at the Brickyard anyway.

Larson snatched the win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway two months after he’d come to Indy to compete in the Indy 500.

And he wants to do it again.

“I love you, Indiana fans, and I know you love me too,” Larson shouted to the grandstands after his win . “How ’bout we come back next May and try to kiss the bricks in the Indy car?”

Of course, to pull off such a daunting feat — weather took its toll on the first attempt earlier this year — Larson will need the blessing of his team.

At least for now, that will wait.

“Not yet,” said Rick Hendrick on stage with Jeff Gordon, w hen asked if he has signed off on Larson’s quest to run the Indy 500 a second time.

The first time around, weather caused some delays that made it impossible for Larson to run the double he had planned to attempt. He finished 18th in the Indy 500, then attempted to high-tail it to Charlotte where the Coca-Cola 600 was being run.

Larson did arrive and was about ready to jump into the car that had been manned by Justin Allgaier in his stead. Instead, the race was called due to weather, with Larson unable to run any laps.

Still, it was an impressive attempt.

And judging by the fan reaction Larson got on Sunday at the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis, the fans would love to see him try it again. If anything, Larson might be even more competitive this time around.

He’s got the experience now and he has learned from a killer pit road mistake.

“I would definitely love to be back next year,” Larson said at the time, following the Indy 500. “Feel like I learned a lot. Made a couple of mistakes early there with the restart — not sure what I did there. Feel like I did a really good job after that and was able to learn a lot.”

Here’s to hoping Larson gets his shot to run the double again. The racing world would be better for it.
