Position battles are one of the biggest reasons NFL training camps are so exciting.

The Indianapolis Colts may have plenty of spots already locked up, but they also have a number of battles that will take place at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield over the next few weeks.

In speaking to reporters Wednesday, general manager Chris Ballard highlighted some of the prominent position battles he's watching at camp.

There aren't many surprises on that shortlist. Most of the starting roles are locked in outside of a few like X-receiver, cornerback and safety.

Ballard instead focused on some of the depth competitions. The backup MIKE role is likely between rookie Jaylon Carlies and Segun Olubi

Meanwhile, Trey Sermon enters camp with the inside track to be the backup running back but will face some competition from Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson.

The swing tackle battle does have some intrigue considering it will be between 2023 fourth-round pick Blake Freeland and 2024 third-round pick Matt Goncalves.

These battles will be determined throughout training camp and the preseason so it should be an intense few weeks in Westfield.
