Colts lose Samson Ebukam for the season to torn Achilles

Tragedy struck the Indianapolis Colts on Monday.

With the news of one of the top pass rushers on their roster, Samson Ebukam tearing his Achilles during Sunday's training camp practice.

It wasn't a great sign for Ebukam that he needed a cart to take him off the field during Sunday's practice. And now it is official that Ebukam's 2024 season has ended before it can even begin.

The Colts signed Ebukam last offseason after he spent his first four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and the next two with the San Francisco 49ers. After seeing him start all 15 of his games with the 49ers in 2022, the Colts handed him a three-year $24 million contract. He repaid the team immediately, leading an impressive Colts pass rush in sacks in 2023 with 9.5.

The next step for Ebukam will be having surgery to repair his Achilles. Then, he will begin the process of recovery and preparation for the 2025 season, which is set to be the final year of his current contract with the Colts.

Ebukam was set to be a day-one starter for the Colts, and it can't be stated enough how massive this loss is for their defense. With him out, the Colts will likely look to 2024 first-round pick Laiatu Latu to take over the starting job opposite of Kwity Paye . Dayo Odeyingbo and Tyquan Lewis are now expected to be the primary backups off the edge, with both having the ability to slide inside as well.
