Local families asking those with information on fatal hit-and-run crash to come forward

INDIANAPOLIS — Police are still investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened on the west side of Indianapolis over the weekend.

The two individuals killed in the crash have been identified as 29-year-old Jorge Cabrera and 22-year-old Welsy Santos.

Just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning, Santos and Cabrera were on a motorcycle ride down Lafayette Road when they were struck by a car. The driver who hit them fled the scene on foot, and IMPD is still searching for potential suspects.

“The fatal hit-and-run accident investigation team continues to actively work this investigation, utilizing those tools, the security cameras, and speaking with individuals on scene that may have been working in the area, seen something,” said Tommy Thompson with IMPD.

“That’s what that unit does, and that’s what they do very well.”

Police are also talking to the victims’ families.

5 hours after the crash, police showed up to the front door of Daniel Cordoba’s house.

“They asked me, ‘Am I her brother?’ I say, ‘yeah,’ and then they told me she died,” said Cordoba. “I was in shock, to be honest. I didn’t know what to do.”

Cordoba looked up to his big sister Welsy as a role model. He also said he doesn’t know how close Santos’ relationship with Cabrera was, but he believes they were friends.

Cordoba added that he and his family are angered by the reckless decisions the driver who hit Santos and Cabrera made.

“She could have been saved probably by them, like if they took the time to check on them,” said Daniel. “I remember, the police told us that she had a pulse when she was hit. She was still breathing.”

According to people working in the area the hit-and-run occurred in, crashes are frequent. One man working at a tire shop said he has been in a crash on Lafayette Road.

”I was also involved in a hit-and-run in my younger days,” said Justin Hayden at Tire 1. “Someone hit me from the rear and just took off. We weren’t able to find them.”

“I don’t know how people can live like that, like knowing they killed someone,” Cordoba said.

“It’s always gonna haunt them for the rest of their lives.”
