Q&A: Kevin Bowen’s 14th Year Covering The Indianapolis Colts

Kevin Bowen , a seasoned sports journalist and on-air talent at 93.5 & 107.5 The Fan, is embarking on his 14th season covering the Indianapolis Colts.Known for his honest and insightful delivery of both positive and negative news about the team, Bowen has established himself as a valued figure when it comes to getting quick and accurate news on the Colts.

Recently, he shared his perspectives on his extensive tenure reporting on the Indianapolis Colts, providing a glimpse into his experience and dedication to delivering authentic sports journalism in the world of Colts football.

How did you get into covering the Colts?

Kevin Bowen’s response: I’ve always had such a sports passion.  One of my 7 th grade teachers Deb Davis knew this about me and told me I could turn it into more than that moving forward, so she got me into writing about sports. And then doing it for my hometown team now is just an added bonus knowing what the team means to so many people.

Do you have a favorite moment covering the Colts?

Kevin Bowen’s response: I always go back to the Packers game in 2012, the first game Chuck Pagano missed due to his leukemia diagnosis. It was such an incredible atmosphere. The Colts got down big, came roaring back behind Reggie Wayne dazzling with his orange gloves, worn for Pagano. And then hearing the crowd get into it.

Do you have a most exhausting moment of covering the Colts?

Kevin Bowen’s response: Just all of the Andrew Luck injury saga. It seemed never-ending with a lack of clarity across 3 years. And, of course, it involved the most important player this franchise has had in the last decade-plus.

Do you have a favorite piece of content that you have produced while covering the Colts?

Kevin Bowen’s response: I did a big feature on Reggie Wayne late in his career, and really enjoyed that. More than an individual piece though, I’d say just the multi-platform content, in a timely manner, is what I’m most proud of. I know I’m not the most talented writer/talker. But I try to produce a variety of content, across multiple platforms, with a strong belief in my opinions rooted off of some facts.

Who is your favorite interview with in your time covering the Colts?

Kevin Bowen’s response: Among the players I really enjoyed talking with: Pat McAfee, D’Qwell Jackson, Matt Hasselbeck, Reggie Wayne, Zaire Franklin.

In your time covering the Colts that have yet to win a super bowl do you think this franchise is on its way of doing so anytime soon?

Kevin Bowen’s response: I would say this: they are finally on the right path of trying to find sustained success. I’m a big believer that is the route you have to take to win a Super Bowl. Peyton Manning took 6 years to win a playoff game, 9 to win a Super Bowl. You don’t fall out of bed one year and win one. You have to give yourself multiple chances at it. Even those Manning-era Colts would admit the 2006 wasn’t their best team during that run, yet that’s the one that got hot at the right time and won it all. Fast forward to the present-day Colts and with the Shane Steichen/Anthony Richardson attempt you now have the combination to try and create such a run, compared to the constant band-aid nature of stop-gap quarterbacks falling the retirement of Andrew Luck.

How does it feel having to be a provider of news?

Kevin Bowen’s response: I try not to take it lightly. My first belief is making sure everything I say/write comes from journalistic integrity. Why should you consume my work, if I’m not following that? And then off of that, I give my opinion and editorial thoughts on the topics at hand. I’m not a big breaking news guy (I think the whole premises can get really messy).

What is the coolest event you got invited to attend due to covering the Colts?

Kevin Bowen’s response: Probably going to London for Colts/Jaguars in 2016. Jim Irsay hosted a big contingent at Kensington Palace on the Friday night. Some other moments that come to mind, attending the 2012 Super Bowl in Indy, being in Atlanta for the Super Bowl pitch meetings in 2014, riding on a plane with Andrew Luck to a Riley Hospital event in South Bend.

Any words of advice for any young kids who want to cover the Colts in their future?

Kevin Bowen’s response: Be passionate. Be flexible. Don’t be afraid to fail. These are all things I didn’t appreciate enough when first starting out. But it’s a must to survive an ever-changing climate.
