Felon Faces Charges for Encouraging Kids to Fire Gun

INDIANAPOLIS –Indy Metro Police arrested a man for firing a gun into the air and giving it to two children, ages 10 and 14, to shoot as well.

The shooting took place along Hillside Avenue. Police talked to several witnesses who reported that someone was firing shots in an apartment complex.

Police say Jeffery Ware ran back into an apartment. They got a search warrant and told Ware and the two kids to come out on the apartment. IMPD also saw a video of Ware shooting the gun into the air and encouraging the children to join him.

“The alleged behavior is a very disturbing and disappointing.  It is completely unacceptable that any adult would think it is appropriate, not only for himself to recklessly shoot a gun in a busy apartment complex but also to encourage children to do the same,” IMPD Sgt. Tyler Watson.

Police searched Ware’s home and car, finding two handguns, several fired shell casings, and about 80 grams of marijuana. Ware, a violent felon, was arrested for criminal recklessness, dangerous control of a firearm, child endangerment, possession of marijuana, and possession of a firearm as a serious violent felon.

“We as a department are outraged by this, and the community should also be outraged. We have to do better.  Our children deserve better,” added Watson.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.
