Heading into free agency it looked like one of the deepest positions available was that at safety.  Some big names were on the chopping block due to financial commitments elsewhere or salary cap casualties.  Despite the plethora of talent and being thin at the position, the Colts stuck with the guys they had.

Fast-forward to early August and despite not playing their preseason opener yet, the safety position seems to be one of the most often discussed topics out at Grand Park and not for good reason.  It seems that most observing every practice have seen that the position is lacking and no one has stepped up in a very wide-open competition.

The topic of addressing the position via a free agent has come up multiple times and even Chris Ballard has addressed that a move COULD be on the horizon.  There’s still plenty of quality talent available on the open market, specifically former Broncos safety Justin Simmons.  He’d likely be the highest-priced option remaining but it’s not like the Colts don’t have the cap space for a move of that magnitude.  He’d immediately add a solid veteran option at a weak position and help solidify a secondary that looks to be one of the biggest question marks on the roster.

On Tuesday’s show we were joined by IndyStar Colts reporter Joel A. Erickson, who weighed in on the safety issue surrounding the Colts and whether or not he thinks it’ll be addressed any time soon.
