INDIO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities earlier this month seized a collection of weapons, magazines and ammunition from a vehicle in Indio, California.

On the evening of July 1, U.S. Border Patrol agents with the El Centro Sector pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 10 in Chiriaco Summit, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release Wednesday.

When they searched the car, authorities found duffle bags containing 28 rifles, one handgun, 30 high-capacity magazines and 2,210 rounds of ammunition of various calibers hidden in the vehicle’s truck and backseat.

“Smugglers are all cut from the same dirty cloth. They’ll do anything for profit, including trafficking children, drugs, or in this case, weapons headed to Mexico,” said El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino. “Conversely, our agents are forged differently — winners, ready to take it to criminals anywhere, anytime, anyplace, as this excellent arrest indicates.”

The driver of the vehicle, an American man, was arrested, while the weapons and vehicle were turned over to a local law enforcement task force, per border officials.
