Among the students in Vermont State University’s class of 2024 walks a four-legged graduate with an illustrious honorary degree: Max the cat! This kitty received the title of “Doctor of Litter-ature,” which apparently comes with very specific benefits as well as obligations. On Instagram, the university shared an adorable post revealing more of Max’s story. They also included some very sweet pictures!

Apparently, Max the cat has been a fixture at Vermont State University’s Castleton Campus for some time. He belongs to a local family, but he prefers to spend his free time around the school — particularly at Leavenworth Hall. One cute photo shows the kitty hanging out with a group of students who are more than happy to pet him!

Vermont State University shared the exciting news on social media.

“Max the Cat has been an affectionate member of the Castleton family for years,” wrote the university on social media. “He lives with his wonderful owners on Seminary Street and loves socializing with friends outside Leavenworth.”

The caption continued, “With a resounding purr of approval from the faculty, the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has bestowed upon Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges, and litter box responsibilities that come with it.”

Of course, Max wouldn’t be the first cat to “graduate” from a higher learning institution. When student Francesca Bourdier earned her online degree from the University of Texas at Austin, she thought it was only fair that her cat get to join her. After all, the kitty had been right by the woman’s side throughout most of her virtual classes! In order to honor this feline’s scholarly prowess, Francesca dressed her up in a matching graduation cap and gown.

We’re not sure if Max the cat has any idea that he’s received such a big honor from Vermont State University, but he’s probably enjoying all the attention!
