    Video shows substation transformer explosion in Institute

    UPDATE (3:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 11): In a video provided to 13 News, you can see the moments after a transformer at a substation blew up in the Institute area of Kanawha County.

    You can see the sky lighting up from the explosion just before midnight in the video provided by a viewer near the Altivia Plant.

    According to fire crews from Institute, a transformer at a substation blew up. They say there was no chemical exposure or any threat to the public.

    AEP says there were no “extended power outages” as a result of the incident.

    13 News has reached out to Altivia for comment.


    INSTITUTE, WV (WOWK) – An explosion at a substation at a chemical facility is not impacting power to neighboring communities, according to Metro 911 dispatchers.

    The explosion happened around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday night at a facility in Institute. Dispatch tells 13 News no injuries were reported. The Institute Fire Department responded to the scene.

    AEP is not reporting any power outages in Kanawha County. Dispatchers say any impact to power is localized to the facility.
