WICHITA COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — An Iowa Park mother whose 4-year-old son tested positive for drugs and, according to police, had drugs and paraphernalia inside the home where he could reach them, including in his toybox, is back in jail for drug use after being placed on probation, according to prosecutors.
The Wichita County District Attorney’s Office has filed to revoke Charlea Hughes’ five-year probation sentence after she reportedly tested positive for meth and opiates without a valid prescription, beginning about three months after being sentenced.
The motion also cites numerous other violations, including failing to report to the probation office monthly since her probation started, failing to pay for drug testing, failing to perform her community service hours, failing to find employment, failing to complete a drug evaluation as part of her drug rehabilitation, and moving without notifying the probation office, with her current address unknown.
Alleged dad-to-be tased, arrested on charges of assault of pregnant woman She is now being held without bond in the Wichita County Jail.
Hughes was sentenced for child endangerment last September to two years in state jail, and the sentence was then suspended to probation.
She was arrested in January 2023 for endangerment after drug tests confirmed the presence of oxycodone in the child. She had also been arrested before that, in October 2022, for possession of controlled substances in her home. That charge was eventually dismissed when she pleaded to child endangerment.
In late 2022, CPS and Iowa Park police notified the sheriff’s office of the possible case of child endangerment in Hughes’ home.
Police said they had evidence that meth and drug paraphernalia was in both Hughes’ room and the 4-year-old’s room, including in the boy’s toybox.
A CPS investigator said a drug screen on Hughes indicated the presence of methamphetamine, oxycodone and oxymorphone. A drug screen for Hughes’ child was then requested, and it showed the presence of oxycodone.
Deputies said Hughes told them she had an outdated prescription for oxycodone for a prior condition, and she denied making it accessible to her child.
Hughes has several prior arrests for theft and credit card abuse.
In 2017, Hughes was charged with credit card abuse after police said she used multiple from a purse that was stolen from a vehicle.
In 2015, Hughes was arrested after a standoff with police outside of her motel room that lasted more than an hour. Authorities said she was wanted on multiple warrants at the time.
