    How much rain caused flooding in central Iowa Tuesday night

    DES MOINES, Iowa – Several inches of rain fell across parts of Iowa Tuesday, causing flooding in locations like Pella, Indianola, and in parts of Mahaska County.

    Automated weather stations in Knoxville and Centerville picked up over 2″ of rain. Oskaloosa received just under an inch, and Hampton, Marshalltown, Ankeny, Algona, and Creston all saw over half an inch of rainfall.

    Viewers captured dramatic images in parts of the state as roads quickly flooded.

    Several WHO 13 viewers sent in even higher rain totals. Some viewers got over 5″ of rain in Indianola. Greenfield saw almost 5″ and Pella received just shy of 4″. Knoxville and Des Moines picked up about 2″. Here are some additional totals from weather stations around central Iowa:

    • Ankeny: 0.65″
    • Marshalltown: 0.61″
    • Hampton: 0.59″
    • Des Moines: 0.57″
    • Algona: 0.55″
    • Creston: 0.55″
    • Iowa Falls: 0.50″
    • Audubon: 0.40″
    • Lamoni: 0.29″
    • Boone: 0.23″
    • Perry: 0.21″
    • Osceola: 0.21″
    • Carroll: 0.20″

    Chances for showers and storms return for the 4th of July, which will add to rain totals across the state. We are also closely monitoring the levels at Saylorville Lake, which is forecast to rise to 882 feet, just two feet shy of the emergency spillway without the emergency floodgates deployed.
