A woman is seeking advice on whether it's impolite to decline a gift she doesn't want. The woman, who is set to marry her boyfriend of six years, shared her predicament on Reddit.

She has a close relationship with his family due to their long-term relationship . She has always dreamed of wearing her mother's wedding dress, which has been passed down through generations, for her own wedding .

However, during a recent dinner party to celebrate their engagement , her future sister-in-law surprised her with an unexpected gift. The woman explained: "Everyone seemed to be excited but I just felt confused. I awkwardly smiled as I asked SIL what was inside the bag."

To her surprise, her sister-in-law revealed her own wedding dress from two years ago.

Despite the applause from the table, the woman was not pleased with the gesture. Her disappointment was evident, leading others to question her reaction.

She clarified that she intended to wear her mother's dress, not her sister-in-law's. This led to a dramatic scene where her sister-in-law began crying and she was criticised by her in-laws.

Overwhelmed, she ran outside and was later joined by her fiance who shouted at her to get in the car.

He then went on to scold her for creating a "big scene" at the dinner, stating that his sister was being kind and that her dress was far more modern than her mother's "old rag."

The woman felt that her fiance's family had orchestrated the situation, putting her on the spot and expecting her to acquiesce to wearing her sister-in-law's dress without standing up for herself.

Commenters advised her to leave her husband and his entire family, with one stating: "Be thankful that he is showing you who he really is before you marry him. You have just had a glimpse of what your future is going to look like if you go through with your wedding."

Another commenter speculated: "I want to bet SIL did this because the fiance has been complaining about the 'old rag' [original poster] wants to wear."
