A Florida family is mourning the loss of their 3-year-old boy who tragically drowned in a friend's pool in Texas . The toddler, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly woke up early on July 4 and wandered into the above-ground pool at the home.

His mother, Arlette Del Villar, had left the house around 6 a.m. that day without informing any of the other adults present that she was leaving. As a result, her son was left unsupervised. It's just the latest in a number or horror cases that have seen unsupervised children drowning in pools .

The boy's 13-year-old sister was still asleep when the incident occurred. With his mother absent and the other adults in the house unaware of her departure, the young boy managed to reach the pool where he subsequently fell in and drowned.

This information was revealed by the Mission Police Department in Hidalgo County, Texas, to local station KRGV.

Mission, located along the Mexico border opposite Reynosa, Mexico, is situated at the very southern tip of Texas, about 246 miles south of San Antonio. Reports indicate that Del Villar and her children were visiting from Florida , staying at a friend's house on Joyce Drive.

At approximately 1:30 p. m., the Mission police responded to a call reporting a toddler found in the pool. Upon arrival, they discovered the boy floating in the water, already deceased - it was too late to attempt a rescue.

  • Del Villar was later charged with abandoning and endangering a child. She was taken into custody on a $175,000 bond and remained in custody as of Thursday, according to KRGV.

However, she was permitted to return to Florida for a brief period to bury her child and grieve before being required to return to Texas' Rio Grande Valley to surrender herself, which she complied with.
