A new Irish release has been dubbed the scariest film of the year . The thriller was written by a Cork man and filmed in the county too.

The horror film is titled Oddity , and was created by Cork based writer and filmmaker Damien McCarthy.

The modern ghost story centers around a grieving shopkeeper who employs the help of a psychic medium to try and solve the murder of her sister.

The film was shot in a converted barn in West Cork - the same location as McCarthy’s debut feature film, Caveat, which was a hit with horror fans after its release back in 2020. McCarthy was reportedly developing Oddity at the same time he was working on Caveat.

Horror movie fans have taken to social media and review sites like Rotten Tomatoes, to shower the film with praise.

@Shawnmansfield wrote: “Oddity is THE scariest film of the year hands down. I screamed so loudly during one sequence… I didn’t even know a horror movie could still illicit that kinda reaction out of me still! Absolutely terrifying I loved it so much.”

Some users warned against spoilers, saying, “You won't find a better horror movie this year than Oddity. Don't watch a trailer. Don't read a synopsis. Book your tickets.”

The film features several Irish actors , including Carolyn Bracken (The Quiet Girl), Joe Rooney (Father Ted), and Steve Wall (Dune: Part Two). Oddity currently boasts an impressive 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 85% audience rating.

The film was released in select theaters across the US this month, and hits Irish cinemas on August 30.
