A former NFL player, Gosder Cherilus, has been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly assaulting one man and urinating on another passenger during a flight from Boston to Dublin . The Massachusetts State Police confirmed the arrest on Monday.

Cherilus, who was a first-round pick for the Detroit Lions in 2008 and also played for the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was apprehended early Sunday when the Delta Air Lines flight returned to Logan International Airport.

The 40 year old from Wakefield, near Boston, was asked to leave the plane but reportedly became "became irate and uncooperative," according to police. He was subsequently arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and disturbing a flight crew.

The police report suggests that he appeared intoxicated when boarding the plane, argued with the flight crew about his seat, and an hour into the flight, urinated on an elderly passenger. He then allegedly assaulted another passenger and took their seat before passing out.

Cherilus was arraigned on Monday in East Boston District Court, where Judge Debra A. DelVecchio told him: "It's pretty egregious what you did, as alleged," In a post on social platform X on Monday, Cherilus apologised to the passengers and flight crew, attributing his behaviour to a sleeping medication that he doesn't normally use.

Cherilus could not be contacted for a response as no phone number was available. The Globe indicated that Cherilus and his lawyer, Brian Sullivan, refrained from speaking with journalists upon departing the courtroom.

Delta Air Lines acknowledged in a statement released Monday that there was an "unruly customer" on board the flight, which led to other passengers being subsequently flown out to Dublin. However, Delta did not comment on the duration of the delay caused by the incident.

The airline strongly emphasized its position on such matters, stating: "Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement to that end," adding, "We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel."
