Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher explained on Sunday the 'opportunistic' approach of Liverpool in the transfer market , especially illustrated by targeting Federico Chiesa .

"In the past, under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool always worked 12 months in advance," Carragher highlighted during Sky Sports' broadcast as Liverpool triumphed over Brentford. "So they have come in late, they have had to bed a manager in and they have problems in terms of the contracts which they have to fix."

"But the reason Liverpool are not buying players right now is that they are probably already thinking about next summer. That might sound ridiculous but Liverpool in the past five to 10 years have not panicked in the transfer market and I love that about them."

Chiesa could be snatched up for a bargain price of only about $17m (£13m/€15m). Juventus seems eager to offload him, and despite his injury worries, he could represent substantial value for money.

"Do they need reinforcements in certain positions? Yeah. The squad is big enough but do they need more quality to compete with Manchester City and Arsenal? Yes," Carragher added.

"I think there are players out there who they like, they may not be able to get, but if something comes up they will be ready to go.

"Between now and when the deadline goes down, I don't think Liverpool will be putting bids in left, right and center but there will be two or three players that they will have their eye on and will be looking at those clubs to see if they can be opportunistic."
