A mother is facing charges after police found her children living in “inhumane conditions.”

Betty Sue Snider, 35, was arrested Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky, after police visited her home and found it in a state of disrepair. She was charged with wanton endangerment , abandonment of a minor, and endangering the welfare of a minor.

WDRB reported a 16-year-old was found sleeping in the bathroom at her school, which prompted police and officials with Jefferson County Public Schools to visit the address on file for her.

There, they found two children, aged 10 and 11, sleeping in an outdoor gazebo covered in tarps.

The inside of the home was uninhabitable, with no electricity, water and covered in spiders, roaches and rodents, according to local reports.

Mary Burkhammer, the children's great-grandmother, told WDRB she called Child Protective Services several times, but nothing was done to help the victims.

She said: "I don't know what's the matter with the mother. I don't, this is just like a dream, how can you leave a kid one day and one night knowin' they don't have nothin' to eat and they don't know for sure.”

All three children were malnourished and dehydrated, along with some physical injuries, and were taken to Norton Children's Hospital.

According to WLKY , Snider told police she hadn’t been inside the home in months. The children revealed they chose to sleep outside because the conditions inside the home were unlivable.

Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating the situation. Snider is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Friday.
