A countryside bungalow where Oasis superstars Liam and Noel Gallagher stayed when they visited their mother’s hometown in Ireland has recently sold.

The property housed the Gallagher brothers, their kids, their brother Paul and their mother Peggy for almost two decades. The house was listed as The Fort, as it provided a place of refuge for the famous brothers, in a private and secluded area.

The four bedroom dormer bungalow is located in Tonnagh, Charlestown, a small town in Co Mayo . The house which was built in the early 2000s was listed by James Kilcoyne Auctioneers for €309,000, and according to Sunday World, sold for just above asking price.

The Wonderwall brothers visited Charlestown often during the early 2000s - though not usually at the same time. Their mother, Peggy Gallagher, was one of 11 children and grew up in Sonnagh - a nearby parish about 10 minutes from Tonnagh where The Fort was. Peggy emigrated to the UK aged 18 to work as a housekeeper and child-minder. She spoke publicly about how difficult she found settling in Manchester, and returned home often with her kids.

In an interview with Gay Byrne, Noel recalled his childhoods spent in the rural Irish town, long before he and his brother were famous rockstars.

“When we used to have six weeks of holidays in England for the school summer, my Mam used to religiously drag us by the ear, over across the Irish sea for six weeks,” he said. “Because we’d never seen the likes of nettles, and fields and stacks of hay and all that, and she was determined to give us a bit of Irish culture because we were used to like concrete and flats and stuff.”

“It was a bit of a culture shock for about the first four or five years, but we just grew to love it, you know? I mean I still do to this day.”

According to the Sunday World, Peggy and her eldest son Paul were more regular visitors than the Oasis brothers but both stayed numerous times at The Fort with their children. It is unclear where the family will stay now when they visit Ireland, but Charlestown wants to make sure they don’t forget their roots.

Local pub owner John Finan has appealed to the boys to return to their old favorite local for a pint ahead of their sold out Croke Park shows.
