The Alabama Attorney General’s Office said Wednesday that a 26-year-old Irondale man had been arrested in connection with an explosion near their offices in downtown Montgomery in late February.

Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert faces two felony counts of malicious damage by explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device.

“My staff and I are breathing a collective sigh of relief this morning knowing that this individual has been taken off the streets,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said in the statement.

If convicted, Calvert faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and an unspecified fine for malicious damage with an explosive, and 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine for the possession of an unregistered destructive device.

On Feb. 27, the office said that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency found an explosive device near the office. ALEA then followed up with a statement saying the agency was notified of a “suspicious” package near the intersection of Washington Avenue and South Bainbridge Street.

The package had detonated Feb. 24 in the morning, according to authorities.
