Keely Mathis, a senior at Teague High School, signed with the University of Dallas to continue her softball career on Thursday, March 7. She will be playing infield, mainly shortstop.

“I am excited that I get to continue my dream and future while doing what I love,” Mathis said. “Softball has taught me many life lessons. I have met many new people and made forever friendships over the years.”

Mathis plans to earn her degree in Pre-Physical Therapy. She then plans to earn her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Mathis has attended Teague ISD since Kindergarten. She began playing t-ball when she was fouryears- old. At the age of seven, she started playing select ball in the Dallas/ Ft.Worth area. She has played for the Firecrackers, Glory, and Athletics Mercado.

She has been on the varsity team all four years of high school. She earned 1st Team All-District honors as a sophomore and junior.

Her freshman year she was named to the 2nd Team All-District. She also received the Hustle Award her sophomore year.

“Softball has taught me a lot,” Mathis said. “I have had to battle through some injuries over the years, but that has made me love the sport even more.”

Mathis also had an offer from Austin College, but said she loved the environment at the University of Dallas and it just felt like home.

“Keely is the definition of hard work pays off. She has definitely led by example and has been a joy to coach,” Teague Softball Coach Tre’ Craig said.

“Being her third coach in four years was an adjustment for not only her, but for all of our girls, but she has fully embraced it and has been great on and off the field. She will be missed.”

Keely is the daughter of Charlie and Keesha Mathis. Mathis is also involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, and Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). She also competed in powerlifting for two years.

“For me any time you see any of your kids go to the next level is a joy. It’s also a testament to their hard work and their dedication to themselves, their teammates and their town,” Craig said. “I am so proud to be able to say that I have kids going to the next level to continue their careers, because they will be more than prepared.”
