Medal of Honor splash pad reopens after repairs
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — The splash pad at Medal of Honor Park reopened Thursday. For the past few weeks, the splash pad has had no visitors as the city completed repairs. “We came here when it was working for a little bit. It worked for like a few days and then it stopped. We were so upset, and we live close by, so we are here at medal of honor park like every day,” said Alfredo Chavez, a resident.
Sea Turtle's Nesting Attempt Deterred by Crowds on Alabama Beach
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Last night, an Alabama beach became the scene of a disrupted nesting attempt by a sea turtle. The turtle, seeking to lay her eggs, was deterred by a crowd of onlookers and flashing lights. Unable to find a suitable nesting spot, the turtle returned to the water with her eggs.
Luncheon of Love non-profit event
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The third annual nonprofit Luncheon Of Love is a FREE full coarse lunch hosted by Mobile’s own independent recording artist D’Battles and family. This lunch is sponsored by more than 10 restaurants and local businesses here in the Gulf coast. Luncheon of Love originally started 3 years ago in hopes to give the support of love back to the less fortunate community. However it has now expanded and is now open to the general public.
Africatown Plateau Pacers 5K Community Fun Walk
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Africatown Plateau Pacers Non-profit 5013c Organization will be holding their Third Annual 5k Community Fun Walk July 13 at 7:15 a.m., at Kidd Park. Come enjoy a fun 5k walk and learn about the history of this historic community. This walk is open to all ages. All proceeds from this event will help generate funds for the local schools in the community and scholarship programs along with other health related activities.
USA and USA Health awarded grant to study race-based disparities in autism care
The grant will support the investigation of issues regarding social justice in social stratification, health disparities, environmental justice, and racial equity. Sara Garcia Shank, M.D., FAAP, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician with USA Health Pediatrics, and assistant professor of pediatrics in the Whiddon College of Medicine, will serve as a co-primary investigator for an internal research grant with colleagues from the University of South Alabama. Jordan Albright, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, and assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at USA, will serve as primary investigator.
