    Suspect Shot After Attempting to Disarm Deputy During Pursuit; Elderly Victim Seriously Injured

    Homosassa, FL — According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO, earlier today, Thursday, August 8, deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to a disturbing incident involving a suspect accused of battery on an elderly victim. The victim sustained serious injuries during the assault.

    The investigation led CCSO deputies to a residence on West Jarovi Court in Homosassa. The house was occupied by several individuals at the time. As deputies approached, the suspect attempted to flee, exiting through the rear of the residence. A foot pursuit ensued, with the suspect leading the deputy through several residential yards before entering a dense, wooded area off of West Linden Drive.

    During the pursuit, the suspect engaged in a physical altercation with the deputy, attempting to disarm the officer by removing his service weapon from its holster. The situation escalated when the suspect armed themselves with a knife, threatening the deputy with deadly force. In response, the deputy used deadly force to neutralize the threat.

    The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is currently on the scene, conducting a thorough investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as is standard procedure in such cases. Evidence is being collected, and witness statements are being taken to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events.

    The suspect received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. At this time, there is no update on the suspect’s condition.

    As per CCSO protocol, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

    “I am thankful that our deputy was uninjured and that no one else in the community was harmed,” said Sheriff Michael Prendergast. “We appreciate the community’s support as the investigation continues.”
