TAMPA, Fla. – According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), with Florida’s unpredictable weather, driving can quickly become dangerous when severe storms hit. According to FloridaDisaster.org, staying off the roads is often the safest choice. However, if you must drive, following essential safety guidelines can help you avoid accidents and ensure that you and your passengers arrive at your destination safely.

Turn On Your Lights and Wipers

Florida law requires that if your windshield wipers are in use, your headlights must be on as well. This rule is designed to keep your vehicle visible to other drivers in low-visibility conditions like heavy rain. To be prepared, check that your headlights are clean and clear, and replace your windshield wipers at least once a year to ensure they’re in good working condition.

    Slow Down and Stay Alert

When driving in severe weather, slowing down is crucial. Wet pavement can easily lead to skidding or hydroplaning, making it difficult to control your vehicle. Keep a safe distance between your car and the one in front of you, and avoid unnecessary lane changes or passing. Stay patient and alert, and if visibility is poor, use the right edge of the road or painted markings as your guide.

    Turn Around, Don’t Drown

Flooded roads are one of the biggest dangers during storms. It can be tempting to drive through standing water, but doing so can be deadly. The road beneath may be washed out, and even shallow water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. If you see water covering the road, turn around – don’t drown.

    Watch for High Winds

High winds can create hazardous driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles like trucks and buses. Bridges and overpasses are particularly vulnerable to strong gusts, so be cautious and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel. Give larger vehicles extra room, as wind can make it harder for them to stay in their lanes.

Be Ready for Traffic Light Outages

Severe weather can knock out power and leave traffic lights inoperable, creating confusion at intersections. If you approach an intersection with non-working traffic lights, treat it as a four-way stop. When lights are flashing red, come to a complete stop. If they’re flashing yellow, proceed with caution, and be prepared to yield to other drivers. Always follow the directions of law enforcement officers if they are present.

Severe weather driving requires caution, patience, and preparedness. By following these safety tips, you can help protect yourself and others on the road. For more information on severe weather safety, visit FloridaDisaster.org and participate in Severe Weather Awareness Week.
