ROUNDUP: Heroics aplenty for Peabody girls lacrosse

Acton-Boxborough ranks No. 10 in Division 1 girls lacrosse, but don’t tell that to Peabody, which checks in at No. 20.

The Tanners (15-3) went into enemy territory and left with a 15-14, nail-biting victory Friday evening.

Brooke Lomasney (7 goals, 2 assists) scored the winning goal with eight seconds remaining in an action-packed ending – to say the least.

“We went goal for goal,” said Peabody coach Michelle Roach. “They pulled ahead, 14-13, then Madi Barrett (3 goals) got the equalizer.”

Caitlin Snow (10 saves) picked up the 400th of her career. Ally Bettencourt ripped a hat trick, while Connie Patturelli and Leah Bresnahan also found the back of the net.

“Also exceptional on defense was our foursome of Kayla Landry, Maia Davis, Addy Merrill, and Patturelli,” Roach said.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hamilton-Wenham 7
Swampscott 6

Swampscott’s record dipped to 14-3 after its one-goal defeat to Hamilton-Wenham on Friday. Leading the way were Coco Clopton (2 goals, assist), Mia Dahlman (2 goals), and Avery Laundry (goal, 2 assists), followed by Cecilia Tripp (goal), Sophia Ciciotti (assist), Victoria Pierro (assist), and Lilah Caplan (8 saves).

Melrose 16
Lynnfield 14

The 9-11 Pioneers, who sport a No. 13 ranking in Division 4, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first seven minutes against host Melrose, the No. 11 ranked team in Division 2, but the opposition (12-5) went on a 13-4 run to take a three-goal lead with about nine minutes to play at 13-10.

Three times, the Pioneers cut the deficit to one and had several good scoring chances toward the end of the game, but couldn’t come up with the equalizer.

Hayden Valiton had a monster game with six goals, six draw controls, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Ava Damiani had five goals and Taylor Valiton added three goals, an assist and nine draw controls. Clara Caulfield (6 draws, 3 ground balls), Maddie Mastrangelo (2 assists, ground ball), Hannah Ozanian (2 ground balls, caused turnover) and Kayla Santo (2 ground balls, draw) had good all-around games.

BASEBALL

Bishop Fenwick 13
Cardinal Spellman 1

The Crusaders took care of business – and then some – with a 13-1 thrashing of Cardinal Spellman. Timmy Roningen picked up the win with five strikeouts, while John Horgan and Josh Scali each left with two hits.

Lynnfield 8
Burlington 6

The Pioneers roped nine hits en route to an 8-6 win against Burlington in the Brendan Grant Tournament. Dave Tracy (72 pitches) and Luke DiSilvio (54) combined for seven strikeouts.

Leading the way offensively were Anthony Grabau (3 hits, 3 RBI), Tyler Adamo (2 hits), and Owen Mullin (2 hits).

SOFTBALL

Swampscott 9
Salem 5

Swampscott worked a 9-5 victory against the Witches, completing Senior Night in style. Hayden Haskell went seven innings and racked up 11 strikeouts.

For the Big Blue – who had 15 hits, including six doubles – leading the way were Mia Tringale (3-for-4), Olivia Barletta (3-for-3, walk), Maddie Lilley (2-for-3, walk), Haskell (2 RBI), and Melanie Blood (2 RBI) on her Senior Night.

Marblehead 7
Ipswich 0

Another day, another Tessa Francis victory in the circle, giving Marblehead a shutout win against Ipswich. She punched out six batters, while Ruby Calienes came in and struck out 10 more.

Offensively, Luka Bornhorst went 3-for-3, while Clara Donovan knocked in a pair of runs.

St. Mary’s 5
Cardinal Spellman 1

The Spartans closed out Catholic Central League play in style, taking down Spellman by four runs. Gabby Marichal (2-for-3, run, 2 RBI) and Ryleigh Williams (1-for-3, 2 RBI) led the offensive charge, while Aliza Crean-Oviedo (CG, 6 H, 10 K) put on a show in the circle.

Peabody suffered from a walk-off loss Friday evening in a back-and-forth battle. Kiley Doolin (RBI), Lizzy Bettencourt (4-for-4), and Abby Bettencourt (2-for-4, 2 runs) all came to play for the Tanners. Abby Bettencourt also punched out 11 Raiders.

Winthrop 16
Lynn Classical 4

The Rams didn’t have much going Friday evening, falling to the Vikings in a 16-4 final. That said, Brooke Braswell went 3-for-3 with a double, while Rachel Dana also ripped a double to lead the Rams.

TRACK AND FIELD

Lynn English made it a happy Friday, topping traditional archrival Lynn Classical, 104-26, at Manning Field. Maddy McHale won the mile and half-mile, while Abety Kivagheni captured the triple jump and 200. Other winners were Jade Quero (100), Ruby Osorio (400), and Abitale Kivagheni (100 hurdles).

The Bulldogs upped their record to 4-3.

“It’s a team effort,” said coach Brenda Martin. “I had a lot of great seniors who worked hard and kept the others working hard. In the GBL (Greater Boston League), we finished third overall. It was great.”

For Classical (1-6), Marianna De Leon (2-mile) and Bianca Christian (400mh) also placed first in their respective events.
