Man found guilty of killing retired correctional officer in Parlier
A 63-year-old man could spend the rest of his life behind bars after being found guilty of the killing of a father and attempted murder of the man's son.Joe Gomez Jr. was found guilty of all counts Monday afternoon in Fresno County.Back in 2021, Gomez shot and killed retired correctional officer Israel Trevino Jr.It happened in front of this Parlier home near the El Rancho Market.Trevino's son testified in the case, saying the family had a history with Gomez, who drove erratically in front of their home, including the day of the shooting.Gomez's attorney and Action News legal analyst Tony Capozzi had argued there was conflicting evidence in the case and that Gomez acted in self-defense.Gomez is due back in court for sentencing in September, where he faces life in prison.

Thanks to Senate Bill 153, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on June 29 to address the teacher shortage and reduce roadblocks to the education profession, candidates in most credential programs no longer need to provide additional evidence of competence in basic skills if they hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. California 'smash and grab' burglars arrested after string of gun store robberies
Federal authorities Tuesday announced the arrest of six men on suspicion of a nine-month-long smash-and-grab burglary spree targeting gun stores across Southern California. Starting in October 2023, the men — four teenagers and two in their early 20s — are accused of stealing vehicles and then ramming those vehicles into gun stores where they would ransack display cases. The federal indictment alleges that the scheme used other stolen cars as getaway vehicles.
