Smuggling Seizures Soar at Border Crossings

July is proving to be a very busy month for U.S. Federal Agents at California border crossings. They are racking up an impressive number of drug, cash, and weapons seizures - all the result of "Operation Apollo", a counter-fentanyl effort that began earlier this year.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Calexico Port Cargo Facility discovered 148.28 pounds of cocaine and 12.08 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in 56 packages within the frame of a tractor-trailer just last week .

On the same day, at the Indio Border Patrol Station, officers found 450 pounds of liquid methamphetamine worth $540,000 that was hidden in the fuel tanks of a tractor-trailer.
A day later at the same Border Patrol Checkpoint, a K-9 detection team discovered 34 packages wrapped in brown cellophane containing 92 pounds of cocaine worth more than $1.04 million concealed in a hidden compartment in the ceiling of a SUV.
At the Calexico East Port of Entry, CBP Officers inspecting southbound vehicles discovered a spare tire aboard a pick-up truck was being used to smuggle undeclared cash into Mexico.

CBP officers discovered a total of $756,980 in unreported currency hidden within the spare tire - which were likely profits from criminal enterprises in the U.S. en route back to one of the Mexican cartels.
Days earlier Border Patrol Agents from the Indio Station discovered a huge shipment of weapons and ammunition - also likely bound for a Mexican Cartel - during a vehicle stop on Interstate 10 at Chiriaco Summit concealed in two duffle bags, one in the vehicle’s trunk and one in the backseat.
In all, those duffel bags contained 28 rifles, one handgun, 30 high-capacity magazines, and 2,210 rounds of ammunition. Agents arrested the driver, a United States citizen, and turned the man, weapons, and vehicle over to a local law enforcement task force.
At the Otay Mesa Port of Entry a CBP K-9 team discovered 4.62 pounds of fentanyl powder, 7.71 pounds of black tar heroin, 2.46 pounds of brown powder heroin, and 2.11 pounds of cocaine concealed within the muffler of a vehicle. In all, the narcotics weighed in at almost 17 pounds.
CBP officers assigned to the Calexico East Commercial Facility intercepted a total of 515.74 pounds of methamphetamine concealed within wooden furniture cabinets found to contain false cabinet compartments.
CBP Officers found 49 packages of drugs hidden within that shipment. The estimated street value of the drugs is $928,000.00.
All of this - again - is the result of "Operation Apollo" a CBP-led operation focusing enforcement intelligence on trafficking networks in Southern California, including the routes used and their operational logistics.
