    Mitchell, McCormick, Ford named Herald’s Athletes of the Week Brian Smith Tue, 02/27/2024 - 8:14 pm   Alt Text for Image   Alt Text for Image   Tyler Mitchell, of Jacksboro Tiger baseball, Jack McCormick, of Perrin Pirates basketball, and Evan Ford, of Bryson Cowboys basketball have been named the Jacksboro Herald-Gazette’s Athletes of the Week. Contributed/Brian Smith Beginning this week, the Jacksboro Herald-Gazette will recognize one athlete from each Jack County school as the Herald’s Athletes of the Week. Athletes will be chosen with input from the respective districts’ coaches based on factors that go beyond achievement on the field or court. Aside from statistics, athletes who coaches deem to have stepped up in other ways including leadership or general team spirit will be considered as well. Future features will include more stats from the previous week of games and comments from coaches. All three Jack County schools had solid athletic performances last week and had athletes selected for their hard work. This week’s athletes of the week are Tyler Mitchell, of Jacksboro Tiger baseball, Jack Mc-Cormick, of Perrin Pirates basketball, and Evan Ford, of Bryson Cowboys basketball. Tyler Mitchell, JHS Jacksboro’s Athlete of the Week is Tyler Mitchell. Mitchell, an outfielder, had a three hit performance in a 9-3 season opening victory Monday, Feb. 19 over Bridgeport. Mitchell had a key two-RBI single in the third, giving the Tigers a 5-1 lead. His second-inning triple got the Purple on the board with the first run of the season. Jack McCormick, PWHS Perrin’s Athlete of the Week is junior Jack Mc- Cormick, who had 35 points in the squad’s playoff opening victory over Saint Jo. The junior guard had back-to-back threes in the second quarter as the Pirates (32-4) began to pull away. He had four threes for the game and was 4-5 at the free throw line for a team that was 12-16 at the stripe. “Jack and his teammates showed tremendous toughness, will and determination to get the playoffs started,” Perrin coach Todd McCormick said. Evan Ford, BHS Bryson’s Athlete of the Week was basketball player, junior Evan Ford. Ford led the Cowboys in scoring with 11 points in a loss to Slidell which ended the squad’s season. All three coaches were pleased with their squad’s play during the season.
