RAVENSWOOD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Plans for the removal of a high-hazard dam and subsequent planned restoration effort for Turkey Run Lake have been placed on hold following a director from Governor Jim Justice last month.

According to West Virginia Department of Commerce Director of Marketing and Communication, Andy Malinoski, on Friday, July 19, 2024, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Division of Natural Resources were directed by Governor Justice to pause plans pertaining to Jackson County’s Turkey Run Lake.

The decision reportedly came following a public notice published by the United States Corps of Engineers which solicited remarks on the proposed removal of the high-hazard lake dam and restoration of the lake to a stream and wetland complex.

“Our priority is to make sure we are doing what is right in this situation,” said Governor Justice. “I want our agencies to take all the time they need to make sure the project benefits both the communities of our state and our natural resources.”

As a result of these developments, initiatives pertaining to Turkey Run Lake have been temporarily suspended by the Department of Environmental Protection.

The pause, it is said, will allow for a more comprehensive assessment of the situation as well as engagement with stakeholders so that a balanced and sustainable path forward can be achieved.
