JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – There are several strategies that you can use to stay cool and safe this summer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1,220 people in the United States are killed by extreme heat every year. The summer of 2023 was Earth’s hottest year on record since global records began in 1880.

Cleotha Sanders, deputy fire chief with the Jackson Fire Department (JFD), said hydration is key during the summer months in Mississippi. When participating in summer activities, such as swimming and grilling, it’s best to take precautions.

“One of the things that we see throughout the summer months is people are using grills, and they are inappropriately disposing of coal. So, we asked that if you’re going to be grilling number one, always make sure that you are following the manufacturer’s instructions with regard to grilling and keep a three foot clearance around your grill free of pets, kids. And you want to make sure that you are far enough away from the home, so you won’t accidentally start a fire,” Sanders said.

Tracking heat forecasts, informing communities about cooling stations, and monitoring sensitive groups are always helpful. Experts said wearing light-colored, breathable clothes also goes a long way.
