JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – A Jackson family continues to mourn after losing their loved one to gun violence in the capital city.

“My plea to the community is for the parents to hold their children accountable when they see them doing wrong,” said Latoya Mason, the mother of Zedrick Warner.

Police said Warner was killed in June 2024 near the 3100 block of Woodbine Street. He was a junior at Jackson State University (JSU) studying engineering.

“We are traumatizing too many families in our community with this violence. From our young people, we’ve got to deal with conflict a better way, besides taking that person away from their family,” said Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade.

Mason is in the process of creating an organization to teach conflict resolution to young men and women in the community in hopes of creating change.

“Because I love my son and again, his life will not be in vain. I will fight. I will march. I will do whatever it takes in this community, as long as I have within me,” she said.

Mason also plans to work with law enforcement.

“We don’t have anybody that we’ve charged in this case yet. And we’re not going to stop until we find out who committed this act against this young man and all the people who are victims of crime in our city,” said Wade.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting can contact the Jackson Police Department (JPD) at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477).
