Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South, one of the country’s top HBCU bands, is on a mission to raise funds for its highly anticipated performance at the 136th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on January 1, 2025.

The Sonic Boom, renowned for its electrifying shows, has earned a spot in the Rose Parade, a significant milestone for the band and Jackson State University. Last summer, Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association President Ed Morales was surprised to learn that the band had never participated in the parade before. This selection has given the Sonic Boom ample time to prepare and raise the necessary funds for the trip.

To cover travel expenses, Jackson State University has launched the “Give the Boom Their Roses” fundraising campaign. The campaign has gained momentum with community support and recent events. Supporters can donate online to help send the band to California. Jackson State University recently held a “Give the Boom Their Roses Day,” featuring performances, community activities, and speeches to boost fundraising efforts.

Jackson State University band has been on fire. The Sonic Boom of the South has been making waves with its performances for decades, particularly within the last year. It participated in the inaugural Band of the Year competition, which delivered outstanding performances but fell short of North Carolina A&T.

It also opened for Drake and J. Cole’s concert, showcasing its talent to a wider audience. The HBCU band performed with Usher at the 2024 Super Bowl and remains focused and determined to shine at the Rose Parade.

JSU Band Director Roderick Little and Dr. Lisa Beckley-Roberts, chair of Jackson State University’s music department, have emphasized the band’s rigorous preparation. The Sonic Boom will begin its training with physical exercises every morning before sunrise, followed by marching and practicing in formation.

The Sonic Boom’s journey has united the Jackson State University community. Local businesses and alumni associations are organizing fundraisers and donating to support the band’s travel expenses. The campaign includes a video titled “Give the Boom Their Roses,” where band members share what the band means to them.

Join the movement and support the Sonic Boom of the South on its road to the Rose Parade. Your donations will help make this dream a reality. To donate, visit their fundraising page .
