Florida Gov. DeSantis Orders Flags At Half-Staff In Honor Of Former Rep. Betty Holzendorf

Former Representative Betty Holzendorf passed away at the age of 84 on February 29, 2024.

In honor of her service and memory, Florida Gov. DeSantis ordered flags at half-staff.

Holzendorf represented House District 16 from 1988 to 1992 in the Florida House of Representatives. After her tenure in the House, she represented District 2 in the Florida Senate from 1992 to 2002.

“Betty Holzendorf became one of the state’s most influential political figures. Her ability to deal with controversial issues without losing focus of the goal and her willingness to fight for the disenfranchised earned her respect from all regions of Florida. She used her childhood experiences to help create economic development programs in her community and residents across Florida. Betty’s tenacity, zeal, and courage were often compared to that of Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. However, Betty had her style and was assuredly in a class of her own,” her obituary read.

Following her time as an elected official, Representative Holzendorf continued her dedication to public service and improving her community.

“As a mark of respect, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the Duval County Courthouse in Jacksonville, Florida, the City Hall of Jacksonville, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, from sunrise to sunset on Monday, March 11, 2024,” said Florida Gov. DeSantis.
