What To Expect From Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence In 2024

    By Ian Van Roy,

Trevor Lawrence was one of the most hyped draft selections of the last decade. While there have been reasons to celebrate for Jacksonville Jaguars fans, there have also been reasons to worry.

With so many potential outcomes on deck for Lawrence entering the 2024 campaign, it can be hard to nail down a position on the quarterback.

Here’s a look at what the new-money quarterback’s season is set to look like.

Trevor Lawrence on deck for lackluster but disaster-dodging season

The Jaguars have a history of struggling to remain relevant on a perennial basis.

Per Pro Football Reference, the team hasn’t had back-to-back playoff seasons since the 1990s. With vastly more seasons of struggle than success, the odds are stacked against Lawrence. Isaac Newton’s teachings argue that an object in motion stays in motion unless met by an unbalanced force. The quarterback thus far has proven not to be that unbalanced force.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Lawrence or his team will be unwatchable. He didn’t make the playoffs in 2023, but he did deliver the team’s first back-to-back non-losing seasons since 2006-2007 while also delivering the Jaguars their first back-to-back winning seasons since 2004-2005.

As such, fans are set to have a reason to watch the franchise all season long.

Early Trevor Lawrence downtrend creates worry

Of course, while winning is everything in the NFL, a player is also judged on their production.

Quarterbacks might have the microscope trained on their win totals more than anyone, but their statistical production is also important. Lawrence might have treaded water in the win column over the last two years, but his production has alarmingly faltered.

In 2022, Lawrence threw for 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He completed 66.3% of his throws and earned a 95.2 passer rating. However, one year later, he saw a step back. He threw for fewer touchdowns and more interceptions, totaling 21 touchdowns and 14 picks. His completion percentage dropped to 65.6% and his passer rating slipped to 88.5, down almost 10%.

This, in combination with a massive new contract, provides little hope for a bounce-back uptrend.

After receiving a massive reward following a down year, there is little fear that a further slip could hurt the quarterback’s earnings in the long term. Ergo, he has little incentive to pull out every stop to reverse the trend. At least from a financial perspective.

With Lawrence still in his youth, his response to the downtrend could define the rest of his career. One more step back sets him up with negative momentum, and just like other objects in motion, Lawrence would remain on a downtrend with a lower ceiling in 2025 as well.

If Trevor Lawrence can rebound and prove that money doesn’t motivate him, the Jaguars can congratulate themselves on finding a special individual. However, it will be a tough road for the Clemson product.
