The Jacksonville Jaguars have already handed out one massive contract this offseason, giving quarterback Trevor Lawrence a five-year, $275 million extension to tie him with Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow as the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Could the Jaguars ink yet another huge deal within the next year?

Running back Travis Etienne Jr. is heading into his fourth NFL season, which means he is already eligible for a contract extension.

Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton thinks Etienne can haul in some big bucks with such a potential extension, predicting the Clemson product to land a three-year, $58 million deal featuring $25 million in guaranteed money from Jacksonville.

Is Travis Etienne worth big money for the Jaguars?

The question is whether or not Etienne is actually worth a big deal from the Jags.

Let’s remember that running backs are not valued quite like they once were, and Etienne is coming off of a rather mediocre 2023 campaign.

Yes, Etienne put up solid counting numbers, rushing for 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he averaged just 3.8 yards per carry, a massive dip from his rookie season when he logged 5.1.

That being said, Etienne has displayed solid versatility out of the backfield, as he hauled in 58 receptions for 476 yards and a score last year.

Etienne is under team control through 2025, so the Jaguars certainly don’t have to be in any rush to extend him. Plus, they’ll surely want to see if he has a more efficient 2024 campaign before even considering handing him a fresh deal.

The 25-year-old did put forth an impressive rookie year, registering 1,125 yards and five touchdowns as a rusher while catching 35 passes for 316 yards.

If Etienne can post similar numbers while also being efficient in 2024, perhaps he will have a legitimate case to ask Jacksonville for a fairly lucrative extension.

As odd as it seems that Etienne can potentially reset the market for running backs, he did post 1,000 rushing yards in two straight campaigns, which is becoming less and less common in the modern NFL.

If Etienne does that yet again, the Jags may want to seriously weigh the possibility of providing him with some long-term security. It would also greatly benefit quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who could definitely use the stability of Etienne in the backfield.
