'The decision wasn't easy': Award-winning Jacksonville specialty bakery plans to close

An award-winning Jacksonville artisan bake shop known for its inspired, freshly made-from-scratch pies, homemade pop-tarts and hand pies is shutting its doors a year after relocating to Five Points.

Chef Natasha Burton, founder and CEO of Mixed Fillings Pie Shop , 1049 Park St., announced the planned closure of the popular specialty bakery on social media Wednesday morning.

"This decision wasn’t easy, but it’s time for a new chapter in our journey. Stay tuned for details about our last date of service so we can all celebrate together one last time in Five Points," Burton posted on the bakery's Facebook and Instagram pages.

No closing date has been announced for the specialty pie shop , which has earned national and state recognition, especially for its Key lime pie.

Burton couldn't be reached for comment immediately.

Mixed Fillings relocated to the Five Points storefront in April 2023.

Burton thanked customers and the community for its support of Mixed Fillings, which originally opened in May 2020 ― amid the COVID-19 pandemic ― at 2251 Oak St., in a small speakeasy-style storefront about a half-mile from Five Points.

"Thank you for your endless support and love. We can’t wait to share our next steps with you!" she posted in the closure announcement.

In June 2023, the shop's Key lime pie earned national recognition as one of the 10 best in Florida by Southern Living magazine readers.

"Blurred Limes," the not-too-sweet and not-too-tart pie with its unique pretzel crust was ranked No. 8 by readers of the lifestyle magazine that celebrates Southern culture including food, fashion, home decor and travel.

Mixed Fillings was the only bakery or restaurant in the state outside of South Florida to make the Southern Living list. Not surprisingly, the other nine were from Key West, Miami Beach, Key Largo, Islamorada, Orlando, Palm Beach and Tavernier.

Just in time for Pi Day In March 2022, Mixed Fillings was ranked No. 1 in Florida by online review site Yelp.com for its list of where to find the best piece of pie in every state.

Making the move to Five Points in 2023

The move to Five Points from Riverside meant Burton, her husband, Curtis Giebler, and bakeshop staff had more room to make more pies, Burton told the Times-Union at the time.

Joined by family and friends, Burton, Giebler and the bakery team did the renovation work transforming the former Rec Room bar and arcade into the cozy pie shop with a dozen seats.

She cried — overwhelmed with feelings of love and gratitude — when the pie shop passed its final inspection.

"It's been a labor of love … We couldn't have done this without everyone's support," Burton said at the time.

The closure announcement triggered an outpouring of dismay along with words of support and best wishes via social media from pie shop customers. Many suggested potential alternate locations for Mixed Fillings.

"I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you aren't closing for good and maybe just relocating. As long as you stay in Jacksonville works for me. Love love your pies. Please keep [us] posted as to where you are going or what's going on," one woman posted in response to the Mixed Fillings announcement on Facebook.
